When burning your candle for the first time, it is important to allow the candle to burn so that the wax pool reaches all the way across the top of the container. The general rule of thumb is to burn the candle for 1 hour per diameter. So if you have a 3" diameter candles, burn it for no more than 3 hours. This will prevent tunneling- which is when the candle burns straight down the middle and not out to the edge.
Always keep wicks trimmed to 1/4" to prevent soot and smoking. If the flame starts to burn too high, put the candle out, let it cool and trim the wick with either a wick trimmer or use your finger to break off the "crispy" part of the wick. Then relight the candle again. Be careful when you trim your wick not to cut it to short, it will drown in wax.
